On this Match Day 2025, NorthStar Anesthesia proudly congratulates all medical students who have successfully matched into residency programs. Their dedication and hard work has led them to this pivotal moment, and NorthStar celebrates their achievements as they embark on this next phase of their careers.
Healthcare systems and ambulatory surgery centers are currently facing a significant challenge: a growing shortage of anesthesiologists. Projections indicate that by 2033, there will be a deficit of approximately 12,500 anesthesiologists, with rural areas being particularly affected. This shortage underscores the critical need for robust residency programs to prepare the next generation of anesthesia providers to deliver much needed high quality care.
NorthStar Anesthesia remains steadfast in its commitment to resident education and addressing this workforce gap. In 2025, we have four residency programs including those at Detroit Medical Center, Corewell Health, University of Texas at Tyler, and Baylor, Scott and White All Saints, with plans to add additional programs in the future. This expansion reflects our dedication to fostering educational excellence, ensuring high-quality patient care, and equipping residents with the skills necessary to thrive in their careers.
We are inspired by a quote from one of our current residents, who noted: “It’s been so great to form these connections so early in my career and so cool to see the whole dynamic between resident physicians, anesthesiologists, and CRNAs, which is how NorthStar practices (at our facility). It’s such a great team-based model, built on strong relationships with each other. Being able to teach junior residents in my role this year as a senior resident has been incredibly rewarding, too. Overall, this experience has been an early sneak peek into how attending life could be as an anesthesiologist working for NorthStar.”
Two years ago, in Becker’s Healthcare, Dr. Romeo Kaddoum—now NorthStar’s Chief Medical Officer—highlighted the importance of preparing anesthesia residents not just clinically, but also in the business and operational aspects of the profession. That commitment remains stronger than ever today.
“Great anesthesia providers are not only excellent clinicians but also well-versed in the business and operational challenges of modern healthcare,” said Dr. Josh Lumbley, Chief Quality Officer of NorthStar Anesthesia. “At NorthStar, we are committed to training residents in both the science and the strategy of anesthesia, ensuring they are fully prepared for the realities of today’s healthcare environment.”
As we celebrate the next generation of anesthesiologists, NorthStar continues to champion a well-rounded residency education that prepares clinicians for a successful and sustainable career.
Congratulations once again to all the newly matched residents! We look forward to the innovations and advancements they will bring to the delivery of healthcare nationwide.
