STATE AT A GLANCE

CRNA Overview for Kentucky
Kentucky

Kentucky offers CRNAs an abundance of professional opportunities in both hospital and ambulatory surgery center settings. With more than 125 hospitals across the state—and as a state that has opted out of the federal physician supervision requirement for CRNAs—you’ll find a variety of practice environments where your skills are highly valued and your autonomy is respected.
The state is also a hub for anesthesia education, with two nurse anesthesia programs located in and around Louisville at Bellarmine University and University of Louisville. This creates a steady pipeline of highly trained CRNAs and fosters a collaborative clinical culture that supports ongoing learning, mentorship, and professional growth.
Kentucky’s healthcare sector continues to expand, fueled by increased demand for anesthesia services in surgical specialties, rural health initiatives, and outpatient surgical growth. This combination of professional independence, diverse case exposure, and collaborative care models makes Kentucky an ideal state for CRNA practice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

NorthStar FAQs for CRNAs

Unlike a growing number of anesthesia groups, we are not funded by private equity investors. Rather, we are a leading, national anesthesia practice company, founded by an anesthesiologist and a CRNA more than 10 years ago. Supported by a long-term holding company, we are positioned to prioritize strategic, long-term investments across our business rather than short-term shareholder gains.

NorthStar Anesthesia was co-founded by a CRNA, and we value CRNAs as core members of the clinical team and leadership structure. Here, our One Team model gives CRNAs a voice and empowers join decision-making among CRNAs, anesthesiologists, and operational leaders at every level of the organization. We invest in dedicated programs to support your development as a leader at every stage of your career.

At NorthStar, we work with local teams to determine and support the clinical practice that best fits patient need and local environment, which at some sites can include regional blocks.

Our sites offer a rich learning experience where future CRNAs not only develop the clinical skills they need, but also gain exposure to leadership growth opportunities and clinical quality initiatives. With us, you’ll develop a broad sense of the many career possibilities that await you following your training.

In our Triad model, CRNAs, anesthesiologists, and operations teams collaborate in decision-making at the local, regional, and national level. From daily OR board management to ongoing review and assessment of perioperative KPIs, the Triad supports optimal clinical care and business performance, with decisions made peer-to-peer, at all levels.

Here, you’ll gain a wide range of experience practicing anesthesia across clinical specialties, expanding your skills and driving your career path forward. Your experience will vary based on the site to which you are assigned, but our facilities generally cover cases in seven core sub-specialties: pediatrics, obstetrics, cardiothoracic, neurological, regional anesthesia/pain management, trauma, and ambulatory.

Each center’s program is unique. Generally, as an SRNA with a NorthStar site, you will be exposed to the clinical scenarios required to become a board-certified CRNA.

At NorthStar Anesthesia, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to staffing our locations. Rather than emphasize ratios, we build the right staffing model for each location and case mix, prioritizing our anesthesia care team approach to meet patient needs.

We use a variety of compensation models. Base compensation covers agreed upon hours and caseload, and anything above and beyond that is compensated based on discussions among the team.

Regardless of your compensation relationship with NorthStar, we strive to optimize the administrative responsibilities involved in your practice so you can focus on what you do best: Care for patients.
